12th century Hamlet

My favorite version is definitely the 12th century Hamlet directed by Franco Zeffirelli. In the beginning of the film the music the music gives a background on the characters by using music fitting royalty. The organs that were playing during the burial of Hamlet Sr. also created a gloomy mood as we watched Gertrude make a scene of her mourning. I feel the setting is the most realistic and accentuated the darkness of the plot by having the burial in a dark burial cellar. I feel the actors were perfect for the roles they played. Glenn Close was a great actress for Gertrude because she looked the part as well as dedicated to her role. Alan Bates has a very stern and grim face which makes him a very suitable actor for the role. The camera angles also aided in the realism of the movie  by giving us a view as if we were a bug on the wall. It also showed the small actions that give meaning to the character's true nature. Because of these views the audience begins to suspect things that the other characters in the story don't catch on to until later in the movie. The costumes stuck to the setting completely. Royalty was dressed in in more metallic outfits and they dressed as if they were in the 12 century. Making the costumes as dark as they were during the burial also aided in setting the mood of the whole story.
